The Book of Colossians Essay example - 862 Words

The book of Colossians is a letter to the church of Colossae, encouraging them to continue their walk in the faith, of which Paul has ascribed to, and resist the philosophy and empty deceit of human tradition. This passage specifically, Colossians 1:15-23, is meant to establish the supremacy Christ and the sufficiency of his sacrifice on the cross. From this passage, a rather simple truth is found: do not attempt to add on to what is already complete and sufficient. Christ came to this earth fully God and fully man – he was perfect. Through his perfection, he was able to make the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Christ was then able to present man â€Å"holy and blameless and irreproachable† before God. Through his death, Christ was able to return man back to his former state of harmony with God. Christâ⠂¬â„¢s sacrifice was sufficient for the payment of the transgressions of man and erased any record of those transgressions ever existing. Attempting to pay for one’s sins in any other way, whether through human philosophies or angel worship, would detract from the completeness of Christ’s work. Refraining from attempting to add on to what is already complete and sufficient is a truth that is taught throughout Paul’s writings. In every letter, he reminds his audience that man need not rely on anything else but his faith in order to attain the gift of salvation. This truth is also faithful to the cannon as a whole. It is a theme carried throughout the Bible, starting with creation. At the end of each day, God saw that his creation was good and refrained from adding to it. In the act of creation, God set an example of recognizing completion and not attempting to add onto it. This is further carried out through God’s consecration of the seventh day, in whic h he rested from his completed work of creation and later commanded that man do the same. Christ further carries on this teaching in his visit to Mary and Martha. As Mary listens to Jesus as she sits at his feet, Martha is working.
